Do you have any of these symptoms:
* difficulty walking after a prolonged sitting
* persistent pain in the lower back, buttock or hip
* radiating pain down the leg
* numbness, tingling or burning sensation in the back of the leg
* weakness in the hip and knee?
If you do, you likely have a condition called “Sciatica”, which is a combination of pain and neurological symptoms caused by irritation or compression of the Sciatic nerve.
Sciatic nerve is the largest and the longest nerve in the human body. It runs from the lower back, deep through the buttocks, the back of the thigh, down behind the knee, and all the way to your foot. At its widest it is thicker than your thumb.
There are several places where the Sciatic nerve could be squeezed. The most common are right at the spine, where it is sometimes compressed by herniated of degenerated disk, or a narrowing of the spinal canal.
It could also be pinched inside the buttock by a tight pear-shaped muscle called Piriformis (“piri” is pear in Latin). In this case the Sciatica condition is also called the Piriformis Syndrome. You can usually suspect that the Piriformis muscle is responsible for your Sciatica pain if your symptoms get worse after prolonged sitting.
As usual, it is a good idea to start by consulting your physician, who will likely run tests to rule out other conditions and to determine the site of the nerve compression.
And, of course, we at Breathe Spa are always here for you. We’ll check for the signs of Piriformis tightness and help you stretch and relax it with massage and some simple do-it-yourself exercises.
And even if your Sciatica symptoms are not muscular in origin, massage will help you feel better by improving tissue health and sending a calming signal to your Central Nervous System.
